Priya and Dev wanted a DJ who could play Bollywood properly and house properly, without the night feeling like two different parties. That is exactly the kind of brief I love. It started outside with the baraat. I ran a portable rig behind the dhol player so the procession had music all the way to the doors. Inside, Rhea Kapoor hosted, and we planned every entrance, speech and family dance performance together on one run sheet. For the reception I blended Bollywood classics with house, moving between them in the same key so the floor never broke. When the bhangra set hit, Dev's uncles took over the middle of the room and did not leave it until the last song.

Main stage at midnight is the slot every DJ wants and the one with the least room for error. The countdown had to land on the second, the confetti cannons were on my cue, and the harbour fireworks would start whether I was ready or not. I spent the week before building the last twenty minutes around one track that peaks at exactly 11:59:50, and rehearsed it against the official clock with the production team twice on the day. When the count hit zero the cannons went, the bridge lit up and three thousand people were singing the chorus back at me. After midnight I eased it down with an hour of feel good house, so the crowd could find their friends and the families could head off happy.

Lena and Marcus came up from Melbourne to get married on the harbour, and they gave me one brief: open with disco, close with house, and never let the floor go quiet. We started the planning call with their must plays and a short do not play list (no Nutbush, at Marcus's request). I built a custom edit of their first dance that drops from the slow version of the song into a house remix halfway through. They had no idea it was coming until it hit, and the whole room went with them. Aria Blake's trio played the ceremony and drinks, so I picked up straight from their last piece. The floor filled before mains were even cleared and stayed full until the 11pm curfew. Gunners has a strict sound limit, so I ran everything through a limiter all night and kept it lively without a single word from the venue.

Olivia wanted the day to drift from a long lunch into a proper party without anyone noticing the change. That meant reading the garden all afternoon. Saltwater Social played the long lunch, and I took over as the plates were cleared with soul and bossa nova at background volume. As the shadows got longer I moved into disco and turned it up a little at a time. By the time the sun was going down behind the bridge, half the guests were dancing barefoot on the lawn. Outdoor sound on a residential street needs care, so I used a compact column system pointed back toward the house and kept the bass low.

I've been playing Sydney for twelve years: festival main stages, warehouse nights, and more wedding dance floors than I can count.

Same rule everywhere: read the room first, then take it somewhere. For weddings I build the night with you, from the ceremony walk to the last song, and I bring my own sound, lighting and a backup of everything.
